If you do not have a sense of self, you cannot have a life. There is no self to live that life. Therefore you try to live your life through someone else. This is the other symptom of codependent relationships.
That is why it is important to gain a sense of self which is authentic and true to who you are. If you don’t know who you are, how can you know what kind of life will suit you? How will you find your path? And how can you make an honest and feasible relationship?
So, you cannot have a life without a self, or a self without a life for that self to live. And you cannot find either of those in someone else. However, when you have a self and a life, you will be able to share them with someone else, with others, who also have a self and a life. This is the basis of healthy, functioning relationships.
